Football VS Corporate America

I don't know about any of you, but every corporate America job I've had also came with a distinct set of rules. You show up to work on time and rarely get to leave early. You have a documented dress code by which you have to abide (though some terms of that code may be quite subjective). You have a set of tasks that you are expected to perform on a daily/weekly basis. The company has a vision that you are expected to buy in to and exude in your performance. You get the picture, right?

Then will someone tell me what the heck makes a professional football team any different? Seems some players don't think so. Look at Larry Johnson; had Kansas City in the palm of his hand but somehow didn't realize that twitter was so powerful, the media are like bloodhounds to controversy, and his off the cuff comments would come back to haunt him. You do NOT talk about your boss in the electronic world and expect him not to find out. Larry Johnson was released today! 75 yards shy of being the Chiefs all-time leading rusher and he was shown the door. Bye-bye Larry!

Great employees are always good in their prime. But it's when the young folks come in, the dimensions of the job change, and you're no longer always at the top of the consideration list for promotions...that's when true character is seen. Folks want to always bash Randy Moss for leaving early in the 4th quarter but where are the bashers now that Isaac Bruce decided to leave the field in the 2nd quarter after he slipped and fell on a route and was replaced by a younger and fresher receiver? How many companies do you think would allow you to still have a job if you walked out one day just because someone got the project lead over you?

Then there is the other side of corporate America, where someone discounts your abilities, sells short your talents, and underestimates just how far you can go. Joey Porter did that when he started trash talking Brady and the Patriots. In the end, he looked like THAT guy at work who always thinks the award is his, he's halfway through the acceptance speech, and BOOM! Somone else wins the award!!! Joey did not have a single sack nor a single tackle in the Pats/Dolphins game Sunday.

Finally, I know a couple of companies that could take some notes from the Browns. When you have a leader who cannot lead, who cannot get the team to perform, who does not meet the expected competencies of the job it is time to let the 'leader' go and see what the team can do. Consistently underperforming, regular turnover, and disgruntled players does not a team make!

You can see each NFL team and any company in corporate America really are the same; the more money you make the more you think ther rules don't apply!

NEW and IMPROVED!!!!!

Beginning tomorrow, November 9, I am going to start following a schedule for my blog. We are halfway through the college and NFL football seasons, NBA has tipped off, and college basketball is just about underway too. Translation? There is way too much happening for me to cover everything every day. :-)

Mondays & Tuesdays will be all the football from the previous weekend. I find I am too busy watching and focusing on Saturdays and Sundays to be effective in writing.
Wednesdays & Fridays will be college basketball, leaving Thursdays for NBA.

Now there is one catch to this. Cool? Can we make a deal?
If something crosses my mind or, of course, if there is some gossip I do reserve the right to cover more than your regularly scheduled programming. OK?

On that note, I am going to look at today's games, watch the Eagles fly high tonight, and get ready for a Bronco beatdown tomorrow night.

Stay tuned... and more than ever, thanks for following!!!
